How we work

From generosity to lasting change

How an offer of support gets to the right person, and why the Foundation works in four stages.

From generosity to lasting change

Most people want to help. What stops them is usually not knowing who needs what, not knowing whether the help will arrive, and not wanting to embarrass anyone by offering.

Those three obstacles are the whole problem, and they are why Abusua Akoma has a method rather than only goodwill. The Gathering answers the first: a place where needs and offers are both said out loud, without commerce and without shame. Connecting Hearts answers the second: someone whose job it is to match the offer to the need and write down what was promised. A Chain of Hearts answers the third in the cases that need it, with witnesses who make a handover safe for everyone involved.

Someone whose job it is to match the offer to the need, and write down what was promised.

Trust Through Transparency is what makes the other three worth repeating. Receipts, records and reviews are kept so a donor can see what their gift paid for and a family can see how a decision was made.

None of it is complicated. It is mostly a matter of describing a need before proposing a solution, and writing down what was agreed. The hard part is keeping to that when a shortcut would be quicker.

What we watch is whether the next offer is easier to make and the next request easier to ask, rather than the total raised.
